Coram Deo Paichai

The beginning of Paichai Hakdang dates back to April 5, 1885,
when Reverend Appenzeller landed at Incheon Port. Due to unstable
conditions in Korea, he returned to Japan on April 13 to study Korean.
On June 21, he returned to Incheon, where he borrowed two rooms from
Dr. W.B. Scranton, who had arrived a month earlier and was operating a hospital.
He used these rooms as classrooms and taught two students, Lee Gyem-ra and
Ko Young-pil, marking the start of Paichai Hakdang.

Whoever would be great among
you must be your servant

This school motto, adopted in the year following the founding by
Reverend Appenzeller, is based on Matthew 20:26-28.
It was translated into Korean by Jo Seong-gyu, a classical scholar and
Appenzeller's personal secretary and teacher at Paichai Hakdang.
In 1968, it was further interpreted into Korean by Mr. Kim Hak-chan
(Korean Language Department).
This motto encapsulates the ideals and objectives of Paichai education.
